How to add a border to an image

  1. Upload your image.
  2. Set the border width in pixels.
  3. Choose the border colour; white, black or your brand colour all work well.
  4. Preview the result, apply it and download your framed image.

Ideas for using borders

A thin dark or grey outline stops screenshots and white-background images from blending into a white web page or document. A generous white border gives photos a gallery or print-style look, and lets you post a full rectangular photo on a square feed without cropping it. Coloured borders in your brand colours make a series of images look consistent. For printed photos, a white border also leaves room for handling and framing.

Border size and final dimensions

The border is added around the outside of the picture, so the final image is larger than the original: a 1000 × 800 photo with a 20-pixel border becomes 1040 × 840 pixels. If a website needs an exact size, resize the bordered image afterwards with Resize Image. For borders that look equally thick on large and small images, choose a width relative to the image size, for example about 2–5% of the shorter side.

Other framing options

For softer edges, combine a border with Round Image Corners. To add a caption on the border or on the photo, use Add Text to Image. Your image is processed in the browser and never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Will the border change the image dimensions?

Yes. The border is added outside the picture, so width and height grow by twice the border width.

Can I choose any colour?

Yes. Pick any colour with the colour picker or enter a hex code.

Can I make rounded borders?

Add the border here, then round the corners with Round Image Corners.
