How to convert JPG to ICO
- Upload your JPG image; a square crop of at least 256 × 256 pixels gives the best result.
- Select the icon sizes you need, such as 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels.
- Click Convert to create the icon.
- Download the .ico file.
Things to know about JPG sources
JPG has no transparency, so your icon will have a solid background that shows as a square on dark browser themes and desktops. For a clean, shaped icon, first cut out the subject with the background remover and then use PNG to ICO. Photos with lots of detail also become unrecognisable at 16 pixels; a close-up, a bold logo or a single letter reads much better.
For JPG to ICO, crop the photo to a square first for the best-looking icon.
Sizes and sharpness
Each selected size is created from your original image with high-quality downscaling, so start with something at least 256 pixels wide. Small sizes are used in browser tabs and lists, larger ones in desktop and Explorer views.
A common favicon set is 16, 32 and 48 pixels; add 256 pixels if the icon will also be used on the Windows desktop. Check the smallest size carefully: if the subject is not recognisable at 16 pixels, crop tighter around it before converting.
Getting a square icon
Icons are square. If your JPG is wider or taller, it is fitted inside the square with transparent padding at the sides. For a full-bleed icon without padding, crop the photo to 1:1 first with Crop Image.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my icon have a white box around it?
JPG images have no transparency, so the original background is kept. Remove the background and convert from PNG for a transparent icon.
How large should my JPG be?
At least 256 × 256 pixels, so the largest icon size stays sharp.
Can one ICO file contain several sizes?
Yes. That's the point of the format: Windows and browsers pick the size that fits best.
Is the conversion private?
Yes. It runs in your browser and the image is not uploaded.
