How to convert BMP to PNG
- Add your .bmp files using Select files or drag and drop.
- Check the list of files; remove or add images as needed.
- Click Convert. Each bitmap is saved as a lossless PNG.
- Download the PNGs one at a time or as a ZIP archive.
Lossless means identical
PNG uses lossless compression, so the converted image contains exactly the same pixels as your bitmap. That makes it the natural modern replacement for BMP when accuracy matters: screenshots, interface mock-ups, pixel art, technical diagrams and scanned line drawings all stay perfectly sharp.
Unlike JPG, PNG never introduces new artefacts, so you can convert, edit and save again as often as you like. It is also understood by every browser, document editor and design tool, while BMP previews are often missing on websites and in online forms.
How much space you save
Savings depend on the content. Images with large areas of flat colour, like screenshots and diagrams, often shrink by 90% or more. Photographs full of fine detail and noise compress less well losslessly; if you only need a good-looking copy of a photo, BMP to JPG will give a much smaller file.
Colours and transparency
Bitmaps that use 8-bit palettes are expanded to full colour, so they look identical but are no longer palette-based; run the result through the PNG compressor if you want to shrink it further. PNG supports transparency, so an alpha channel that your browser reads from the bitmap is kept.
Frequently asked questions
Is BMP to PNG conversion really lossless?
Yes. PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly, so the image is visually and numerically the same.
Why is my PNG still quite large?
Photographs contain lots of detail that lossless compression cannot remove. Use BMP to JPG for photos if file size matters.
Will colours change?
No. Colours are reproduced exactly; palette images are simply stored as full-colour PNG.
Do I need to install anything?
No. The converter runs in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android or iOS.
