How to view image metadata

  1. Upload a photo with Select files or drag and drop.
  2. Browse the metadata grouped by type, such as camera, exposure, date and location.
  3. Check whether GPS coordinates are present before sharing the original file.
  4. To delete what you found, open Remove EXIF Data.

What metadata photos contain

Most photos carry information beyond the pixels. EXIF data records the camera or phone model, lens, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, orientation and the date and time the picture was taken. If location services were on, it can include precise GPS coordinates. IPTC and XMP fields may add captions, copyright notices, keywords and editing history.

Edited images can also reveal the software used and the original capture date, and some cameras store their serial number, which can link together photos taken with the same device.

Why it matters for privacy

A photo taken at home and shared as an original file can reveal where you live. Many social networks remove metadata when you post, but email attachments, cloud links and files sent as documents in messaging apps often keep it. Checking a file here takes seconds, and because the viewer runs in your browser, the photo is never uploaded.

Supported formats

Metadata can be read from JPG, HEIC, TIFF, PNG and WebP files where it exists. Screenshots and images saved by web browsers or editing apps often contain little or none. For PDF documents, use the PDF Metadata Viewer.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no GPS location?

Location was turned off for the camera, or the app or website that saved the image removed it.

Is my photo uploaded to read the data?

No. The metadata is read in your browser.

Can I edit the metadata?

This tool views metadata. To strip it, use Remove EXIF Data.

Why is the date taken wrong?

The date comes from the camera's clock, which may have been set incorrectly or to another time zone.

Does it work with iPhone HEIC photos?

Yes. HEIC files usually contain full EXIF data, including location when enabled.
