How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Select your PDF or drop it onto the page.
  2. Choose where the numbers go, for example bottom centre or top right.
  3. Pick a format and adjust the font size and margin from the page edge.
  4. Optionally set the first number and which pages to number, for instance to skip a cover page.
  5. Click Add page numbers and download the numbered PDF.

Choosing a position and format

Bottom centre is the most common choice for reports and books, while the outer corners work well for documents that are printed and bound. Plain numbers keep the page clean; a format such as Page 3 of 24 is helpful for contracts and forms because it shows the reader that no pages are missing.

Numbers are placed upright as each page is displayed, so landscape and rotated pages get correctly oriented numbers instead of sideways ones.

Numbering only part of a document

Title pages, tables of contents and cover letters are often left unnumbered. Limit numbering to a page range and choose the starting number so the first chapter page shows "1". If you are numbering one chapter of a larger book, start at the number that follows the previous chapter.

Tips for a tidy result

  • Combine files first with Merge PDF, then number the complete document so numbering is continuous.
  • Increase the margin if the numbers sit too close to existing footers, or switch to the top of the page.
  • Need a title or date as well? Use Add Header & Footer.

Numbering happens in your browser; the document is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave the cover page without a number?

Yes. Choose the range of pages to number and set the starting number so the numbering begins where you want it.

Will page numbers cover my content?

Numbers are drawn on top of the page at the margin you choose. If a document already has text near the edge, increase the margin or move the numbers to another position.

Do numbers work on landscape or rotated pages?

Yes. They are positioned and rotated so they read correctly on each page as it appears on screen.

Can I remove page numbers later?

The numbers become part of the page content. Keep your original file if you might need an unnumbered version.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The numbers are added in your browser and the file stays on your device.
