What PDF metadata can reveal
Most PDFs carry document properties that you never see on the page: the author's name or computer username, a title and subject, keywords, the application and version that created it, and creation and modification dates. Many files also contain an XMP metadata block with similar information and sometimes editing history. That's harmless for some documents, but it can reveal more than you intend when you publish a file, send a document anonymously, or share a draft created on a work computer.
Remove PDF metadata before publishing a document online or sending it outside your organisation, so internal names and software details are not shared.
What this tool removes
The tool clears the document information fields (title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer and dates) and removes the document-level XMP metadata stream. The visible pages are not changed. Other information that is part of the document itself, such as text on the pages, comments, form field values, or names written inside the content, stays. Review those separately, for example with Flatten PDF or by deleting pages.
Related privacy tools
To see what a PDF contains before cleaning it, or to set your own title and author, use PDF Metadata Viewer & Editor. Photos carry their own EXIF data, including GPS location; remove it with Remove EXIF Data. The PDF is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Does removing metadata change the pages?
No. Only the hidden document properties are removed; the content looks exactly the same.
Will the author name disappear from the document properties?
Yes. Title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer and dates are cleared.
Does it remove comments or tracked changes?
No. Comments and annotations are part of the document content, not metadata. Flatten or delete them separately.
Can metadata be added back?
Some software adds new metadata, such as its own name, when it saves a file. Remove metadata as the last step before sharing.
Is the file uploaded?
No. Cleaning happens in your browser.
