How to convert PNG to ICO

  1. Upload a square PNG, ideally 256 × 256 pixels or larger with a transparent background.
  2. Choose which icon sizes to include, from 16 to 256 pixels.
  3. Click Convert to build the multi-size icon.
  4. Download the .ico file and add it to your website or use it for a shortcut.

What's inside an ICO file

An ICO file is a container holding the same icon at several sizes. Browsers use 16 × 16 or 32 × 32 for tabs and bookmarks, Windows uses 32 and 48 pixels in Explorer and on the taskbar, and 256 × 256 for large icon views. This converter resizes your PNG to each selected size with high-quality resampling and stores each one as PNG data inside the ICO, a variant supported by Windows Vista and later and by all modern browsers.

PNG to ICO works best with a square PNG on a transparent background, which keeps the icon crisp at small sizes.

Preparing your source image

Start with a square PNG at least 256 pixels wide with a transparent background. Images that are not square are fitted into the square with transparent padding rather than stretched. Keep the design simple: fine detail and thin lines disappear at 16 pixels, so a bold symbol or a single letter often works better than a full logo.

Using the icon as a favicon

Upload the file as favicon.ico to the root of your website, or reference it with <link rel='icon' href='/favicon.ico'>. Many sites also add a PNG or SVG favicon and an Apple touch icon; you can create those with SVG to PNG and Resize Image.

Frequently asked questions

Which sizes should I include?

16, 32 and 48 pixels cover browsers and most Windows views. Add 256 for large desktop icons.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. Each size keeps the PNG's transparent background.

My PNG isn't square. What happens?

It is scaled to fit inside the square and centred, with transparent space filling the rest.

Can I use the ICO for Windows folders and shortcuts?

Yes. Windows can use the file for shortcuts and folder icons. Embedding icons into program files requires separate developer tools.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The icon is generated in your browser.
