How to crop an image

  1. Upload the image you want to crop.
  2. Drag the crop box and its handles, or choose a preset ratio such as 1:1, 4:3 or 16:9.
  3. For precise results, type the crop size and position in pixels.
  4. Click Crop and download the cropped image.

Choosing the right ratio

Picking a ratio before you crop keeps the result ready for where it is going: 1:1 for profile pictures and square posts, 4:5 for portrait social posts, 16:9 for video thumbnails, banners and slides, and 3:2 for standard photo prints. Free mode lets you crop to any shape, for example to cut a single item out of a screenshot. Cropping is also the quickest way to improve composition: trimming empty space around a subject makes it larger and more prominent in the frame.

Precise cropping

The crop size is shown in pixels while you drag, and you can enter exact values when a form or template specifies them. To end up with an exact output size such as 600 × 600 pixels, crop to the 1:1 ratio first and then scale with Resize Image.

Quality and format

Cropping only removes pixels; the remaining ones are not resampled. PNG images are therefore saved without any loss, including transparency, while JPG images are re-encoded at high quality. Everything runs in your browser, so private photos stay on your device. Need a rounded or circular crop? Try Round Image Corners or the Profile Picture Maker.

Frequently asked questions

Does cropping reduce image quality?

No. Cropping discards the outer pixels only. JPGs are re-saved at high quality, which is visually lossless.

Is transparency kept when I crop a PNG?

Yes. Transparent areas remain transparent.

How do I crop to an exact size like 400 × 400 pixels?

Choose the 1:1 ratio, crop, then resize the result to 400 × 400 with Resize Image.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The crop box can be dragged and resized with touch.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Cropping happens entirely in your browser.
