How to convert BMP to JPG
- Click Select files and choose your .bmp images, or drag them onto the upload area.
- Set the Quality slider; 85–92 is a good range for photos and scans.
- Click Convert to compress each bitmap into a JPG.
- Download the JPG files, or all of them at once as a ZIP.
Why BMP files are so large
A standard 24-bit BMP stores three bytes for every pixel with no compression, so a 1920 × 1080 image takes about 6 MB no matter what it shows. The same picture as a good-quality JPG is commonly a few hundred kilobytes. BMP files still turn up from older versions of Paint, scanners, industrial cameras and legacy business software, and they are awkward to email or upload.
Converting archives of old bitmaps is one of the quickest ways to free up disk space, especially for folders of scanned photographs.
BMP to JPG conversion usually reduces file size dramatically, because BMP stores every pixel uncompressed.
JPG or PNG?
JPG is the best choice for photos and scanned pictures, where its lossy compression is practically invisible. For screenshots, diagrams, pixel art and anything with sharp text, choose BMP to PNG instead: PNG is lossless and still far smaller than BMP.
Supported bitmaps
The converter reads the BMP variants that your browser can open, which covers the standard Windows bitmaps produced by everyday software. If a bitmap contains transparency, those areas are filled with the background colour you choose, because JPG has no transparency. All processing happens in your browser, so the files stay on your computer.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will the JPG be?
It depends on the image, but reductions of 90% or more are common because BMP is uncompressed.
Will the JPG look worse than the BMP?
At quality 85–92 the difference is very hard to see in photos. Text and line art are better served by PNG.
Can I convert several bitmaps at once?
Yes. Add up to 30 files per batch and download them as a ZIP.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
