How to convert Word to PDF

  1. Select your Word document or drop it onto the page.
  2. Choose the conversion mode: in your browser (private, approximate layout) or on the server (most faithful layout), when the server option is available.
  3. Click convert and wait for the PDF to be created.
  4. Download the PDF and check the layout.

Two ways to convert

In your browser: the DOCX file is read on your device, and its text, headings, lists, tables, images and basic formatting are laid out into a PDF. Nothing is uploaded. The layout is an approximation: page breaks, fonts, spacing, headers and footers, text boxes and complex positioning can differ from what Word shows. This mode reads modern .docx files only.

On the conversion server: where this site has its conversion server enabled, the document is uploaded over an encrypted connection and converted by LibreOffice, a full office suite, which reproduces layout far more faithfully and also accepts older formats. The file is deleted from the server as soon as the conversion finishes and is never stored or shared. You choose this mode explicitly; nothing is uploaded unless you do.

Word to PDF conversion keeps your document's text, headings, lists and tables, and the PDF looks the same for everyone who opens it.

Tips for the best result

  • Fonts matter. If the document uses fonts that are not available to the converter, similar fonts are substituted, which can change line breaks. Common fonts give the most predictable output.
  • For documents with strict layouts such as CVs, brochures and forms, use server mode when available, or export to PDF from Word itself.
  • Check the page count and page breaks before sending.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Word document uploaded?

Only if you choose server mode. In browser mode the conversion happens on your device and nothing is uploaded. In server mode the file is sent over HTTPS, converted and deleted immediately afterwards.

Why does the browser version look different from Word?

Reproducing Word's layout engine in a browser isn't possible, so browser mode approximates the layout. For a faithful copy, use server mode or Word's own export.

Can I convert old .doc files?

Browser mode supports .docx only. Server mode, when available, can also convert older .doc files.

Why is the server option unavailable?

The conversion server is optional and may not be enabled on this site. The tool tells you before you convert, and browser mode always works.

Are links and images kept?

Images and basic text formatting are included in both modes. Server mode keeps more advanced elements more faithfully.
