How to remove the background from an image

  1. Upload your photo.
  2. Choose a mode: Portrait for people, Any subject for products and other subjects, or Solid background for plain studio backdrops.
  3. Wait while the model downloads the first time; later runs start faster.
  4. Check the cut-out on the checkerboard preview and download it as a transparent PNG.

Three ways to remove a background

  • Portrait AI uses a compact model of about 7 MB that is tuned for people and portraits. It is quick on most devices.
  • Any subject AI uses a larger, more general model of about 44 MB that handles products, animals and objects. It runs best on a computer, and much faster in browsers with WebGPU support.
  • Solid background needs no download. It removes a uniform colour, such as a white or green studio backdrop, working inwards from the edges, which is ideal for product photos and logos on plain backgrounds.

Where the work happens

The AI models are downloaded once from a public model library and cached by your browser. Your image itself is never uploaded: the model runs on your own device and produces the transparency mask locally. That makes the tool suitable for personal photos and unreleased product shots.

Getting clean edges

Photos with clear contrast between subject and background give the best results. Fine hair, fur and transparent objects such as glass are the hardest cases, so check the edges against both dark and light backgrounds. To place your subject on white or another colour, use Change Image Background Color; for ID photos continue with the Passport Photo Maker.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. Only the AI model is downloaded. Your photo is processed on your device.

Why does it need to download something?

AI models are too large to include in the page. They are fetched once and then cached by your browser.

It's slow on my phone. What can I do?

Use Portrait mode, which has a much smaller model, or use a computer for the Any subject mode.

What format is the result?

A PNG with a transparent background, ready for designs, slides and online shops.

Is it really free?

Yes. There are no credits or watermarks.
