Why convert plain text to PDF

Plain text files are universal but look different on every device, and they have no page layout. A PDF fixes the font, the margins and the page breaks, so the document prints neatly and looks the same for everyone. It is handy for meeting notes, transcripts, server logs, configuration listings, poems and lyrics, or any text you need to submit as a document.

Fonts and characters

A monospaced font such as Courier keeps columns aligned in logs, tables and code; a proportional font reads better for prose. Western European accented letters work with the standard fonts. When your text contains other characters, such as Greek, Cyrillic or other Unicode symbols, the open-source Noto Sans font is embedded so they display correctly. Scripts that need complex shaping may not render perfectly in this tool; for those, write the text in a word processor and convert it with Word to PDF instead.

Good to know

  • Text is saved as real, searchable text, not as an image.
  • Files are read as UTF-8, which is standard for modern text files.
  • To create a formatted document from HTML, use HTML to PDF; to extract text from a PDF, use PDF to Text.

Conversion happens in your browser; your text is never uploaded.
