How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Click Select files or drag JPG/JPEG images onto the upload area. You can add several at once.
  2. Check the file list and remove anything you added by mistake, or add more images.
  3. Click Convert. Each image is decoded and saved again as PNG inside your browser.
  4. Download the PNG, or use Download all (ZIP) when you converted a batch.

When PNG is the better choice

JPEG throws away a little detail every time a file is saved, which is fine for a finished photo but a problem when an image goes through several rounds of editing. PNG is lossless: once your picture is a PNG, you can open, edit and save it as often as you like without adding new compression artefacts.

PNG is also the format to use when you plan to add transparency later, for example after cutting out a subject with the background remover, and it is often required by design tools, slide templates and upload forms that ask specifically for PNG.

What converting cannot do

Converting does not bring back detail that JPEG compression already removed. Any blockiness or blur in the original is copied faithfully into the PNG. Expect the PNG to be noticeably larger than the JPG, often several times larger for photos, because lossless compression cannot discard information the way JPEG does.

If your goal is a smaller file rather than a lossless one, use the JPG compressor or convert to WebP instead.

Privacy and metadata

The conversion happens in your browser tab, so your photos are never uploaded. Because the PNG is written from the decoded pixels, camera details and GPS coordinates stored in the JPG's EXIF data are not carried over, which is useful when you want to share an image without revealing where it was taken.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. PNG preserves exactly what the JPG shows, including any compression artefacts. It only prevents further loss from future edits.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG uses lossless compression, which keeps every pixel. Photos contain a lot of fine detail, so a lossless copy is usually several times the size of the original JPEG.

Can I convert many JPG files at once?

Yes. Add up to 30 images per batch and download all the PNG files together as a ZIP archive.

Is JPEG the same as JPG?

Yes. .jpg and .jpeg are two file extensions for the same format, and both are accepted by this converter.

Does the PNG keep my photo's EXIF data?

No. Camera model, date and location data are not copied into the PNG. Keep your original JPG if you need that information.
