How to view and edit PDF metadata
- Select the PDF or drop it onto the page.
- Read its properties: title, author, subject, keywords, creating software, dates and document details.
- Edit the fields you want to change.
- Save and download the PDF with the updated metadata.
Why metadata matters
The document title is often what a browser tab, a PDF reader's title bar or a document management system shows instead of the file name. Search engines may use it when indexing PDFs published on a website, and accessibility tools read it aloud. Exporting from office software frequently leaves unhelpful titles such as "Microsoft Word - Document1" or an old author name. Setting accurate title, author, subject and keywords makes documents look professional and easier to find.
What you can see
- Descriptive fields: title, author, subject and keywords, which you can edit.
- Technical fields: the creator application and producer library, which show how the file was made.
- Dates: when the document was created and last modified.
- Document details such as the number of pages.
Keywords are best kept to a short list of terms separated by commas. Write the title as a human-readable name, such as "2026 Annual Report", rather than a file name.
Privacy check before sharing
Viewing metadata is a good habit before you publish or send a document externally: it often reveals usernames and internal software. If you want to remove everything rather than edit it, use Remove PDF Metadata. For photos, see Image Metadata Viewer. The PDF is read in your browser and never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Which fields can I edit?
The main descriptive fields: title, author, subject and keywords.
Does editing metadata change the document content?
No. Only the document properties change; pages stay exactly the same.
Why does my PDF show an odd title in the browser tab?
Browsers often show the document's title metadata instead of the file name. Edit the title here to fix it.
Can I view metadata of a password-protected PDF?
Yes, after entering its password when prompted.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Metadata is read and edited in your browser.
