How to convert PDF to Excel

  1. Select the PDF that contains tables.
  2. Choose the pages to convert.
  3. Click convert. Rows and columns are detected from the position of the text.
  4. Download the .xlsx file and open it in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice Calc.

How tables are detected

Tables in a PDF are usually just text placed in neat rows and columns, sometimes with lines drawn around them. The converter groups text into rows by vertical position and into columns by how the text lines up across rows, then writes each value into its own cell. Numbers are stored as numbers where they can be recognised, so you can sum and sort them straight away.

PDF to Excel works best on digitally created PDFs; for scanned pages, switch on the OCR option so the tables can be read.

Best results and limitations

  • Clean, regular tables such as bank statements, invoices, price lists and exported reports work best.
  • Merged cells, multi-line cells, tables spanning several columns of text, and tables without clear alignment may be split or merged differently than intended.
  • Scanned tables are images, so run OCR PDF first.
  • Check totals and key figures after conversion, especially for financial use.

Keeping financial data private

Statements and payroll reports are exactly the kind of documents you shouldn't upload to unknown servers. This converter runs in your browser, so the data never leaves your device. For tables that you want to edit as part of a document, try PDF to Word; to create a PDF from a spreadsheet, use Excel to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Will every table convert perfectly?

Regular tables usually convert well. Irregular layouts, merged cells and text wrapped inside cells may need some manual tidying.

Are numbers stored as numbers?

Yes, where they can be recognised, so formulas like SUM work on them. Check values with unusual formats.

Can I convert a scanned bank statement?

Run OCR PDF first. OCR accuracy depends on scan quality, so double-check the figures.

Can I open the result in Google Sheets?

Yes. The XLSX file opens in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc and Apple Numbers.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Tables are extracted in your browser.
