How to convert PNG to WebP

  1. Click Select files or drop your PNG images onto the upload area.
  2. Set the Quality. Use 90 or higher for screenshots with small text and 75–85 for photos.
  3. Click Convert. Transparent areas stay transparent in the WebP output.
  4. Download the results individually or as a single ZIP file.

PNG and WebP compared

PNG stores every pixel losslessly, which keeps graphics crisp but makes complex images heavy. WebP can compress much more aggressively and, unlike JPG, keeps an alpha channel even in lossy mode. That makes it ideal for transparent logos, product cut-outs and illustrations that need to sit on any background without a white box around them.

PNG to WebP conversion often cuts the size of website graphics sharply, which helps pages load faster.

Getting the best results

Images with photographic content and transparency, such as people or products cut out with the background remover, usually benefit the most. For screenshots and UI graphics with fine text, keep the quality high so letters stay sharp, and zoom in on the result before replacing your originals.

Very simple graphics with only a few flat colours are often already tiny as PNG. If the WebP is not smaller, try the PNG compressor instead.

Compatibility

WebP displays in every current browser. Creating WebP requires Chrome, Edge or Firefox, because Safari cannot encode it. Keep your PNG files for print workflows and older apps that do not accept WebP.

If you manage a website, test a few converted images on your heaviest pages first: the biggest gains usually come from large decorative PNGs such as banners and hero illustrations.

Frequently asked questions

Does transparency survive the conversion?

Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels are kept in the WebP file.

Is the WebP output lossless?

The image is encoded at the quality you choose. Lower settings discard detail, so keep your PNG if you need an exact copy.

Why is my WebP bigger than the PNG?

Flat graphics with few colours compress extremely well as PNG. For these, a WebP may not help; compress the PNG instead.

Can I use this in Safari?

Safari cannot create WebP images. Open the tool in Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
