How to fill in a PDF form

  1. Select the fillable PDF form or drop it onto the page.
  2. The form's fields appear on the page preview. Click a field and type, tick checkboxes, choose radio buttons or pick an option from a drop-down list.
  3. Choose whether to keep the form editable or flatten it so the answers become a permanent part of the page.
  4. Click the button to save, then download the completed form.

Works with fillable (AcroForm) PDFs

Fillable PDFs contain interactive fields defined inside the file, usually created in Acrobat, LibreOffice or a form builder. This tool reads those fields, shows them where they sit on each page and writes your answers back into them, so the result works in Adobe Reader, browser PDF viewers and on phones.

Not every form is fillable. If the form is a scan or a flat PDF with blank lines, there are no fields to fill; type on it with Edit PDF, or add real fields with Create PDF Form. Dynamic XFA forms made with Adobe LiveCycle are a different technology and are not supported.

If a document has no fillable fields yet, add them first with Create PDF Form and then fill the PDF form here.

Keep it editable or flatten it?

Leave the form editable if someone else still needs to complete their part, or if you may correct an answer later. Flatten it when you are submitting the final version: flattening converts the field values into ordinary page content, so they cannot be changed by accident and appear identically in every viewer, including ones with poor form support. You can also flatten later with Flatten PDF.

Tips for submitting forms

  • Check every page; some forms continue fields on later pages.
  • Use the format the form asks for, such as DD/MM/YYYY dates.
  • Need a signature? Fill the form first, then add your signature with Sign PDF.
  • Your answers are processed in your browser and are never sent to us.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I click on the form?

The PDF probably has no interactive fields. Scanned and flat forms only look like forms. Use Edit PDF to type on them, or Create PDF Form to add fields.

Can I save a partly completed form and finish later?

Yes. Download it without flattening, and the answers stay in the fields. Open the downloaded file here again to continue.

Will the form still be fillable after I download it?

Yes, unless you choose to flatten it. Flattened forms keep the answers but the fields are no longer editable.

Are my answers sent anywhere?

No. The form and your answers stay in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Does it support XFA forms?

No. XFA forms from Adobe LiveCycle Designer need Adobe software. Most government and business forms use standard AcroForm fields, which are supported.
