How to edit a PDF for free
- Click Select file or drop your PDF onto the page. If it is password protected, enter the password to open it.
- Choose Edit text and click a line of existing text to change, restyle or delete it, or use Add text to type something new anywhere on the page.
- Use the toolbar to add images, shapes, arrows, highlights or freehand drawings. Drag the handles to move, resize and rotate them.
- Jump between pages with the thumbnails on the left, and use Undo and Redo whenever you change your mind.
- Click Download to save the edited PDF.
Real text editing instead of white boxes
Many online editors only paint a white rectangle over old text and type new words on top. The hidden text is still in the file, it still turns up when someone copies or searches the document, and the patch is easy to spot on coloured backgrounds. This editor works differently: it reads the drawing instructions inside each page, finds the text you clicked, and rewrites that text in place. Deleted words are genuinely removed from the page, and edited words keep their position, size and colour.
Wherever possible the original font is kept. PDFs often embed only the characters they actually use, so if you type a letter the embedded font does not contain, the editor switches that text to the closest standard font (a Helvetica, Times or Courier style) and tells you it has done so, rather than silently producing missing or garbled characters.
A free PDF editor with no catches
Everything in this editor is free: editing existing text, adding text boxes, images and signatures, highlighting, sticky-note comments, form fields, and adding, deleting or rotating pages. There is no sign-up, no trial period and no watermark on the downloaded file, and there is no limit on how many PDFs you edit. The only limit is file size (up to 200 MB per file), because your browser does the work.
The editor works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone in a current browser. Your changes are autosaved on your own device while you work, so a refresh does not lose them; password-protected files are never autosaved.
What you can change
- Existing text: edit wording, delete lines, change size, colour and alignment. Bold and italic are available when the text uses a standard font.
- New content: text boxes, images, signatures, rectangles, ellipses, lines, arrows, highlights and freehand drawings, all movable and resizable.
- Pages: add a blank page, delete a page or rotate it without leaving the editor.
Edit PDFs in Hindi and other Indian languages
Many online editors only handle English text. This editor can change existing Hindi (Devanagari) text in a PDF and write new text in nine Indian scripts: Devanagari, Bengali, Gurmukhi, Gujarati, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, with conjunct letters shaped correctly for most scripts. Bengali conjuncts may not always join perfectly yet, and the editor warns you when Bengali text is used.
For scanned documents, run OCR (available for Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and many other languages) to make the text searchable before editing.
Scanned PDFs and other limitations
A scanned page is a photograph of paper, so there is no text inside it to rewrite. You can still add new text, images and drawings on top, or use OCR PDF to recognise the words. Text produced by OCR is a reconstruction and is always labelled separately from original text editing.
The editor does not reflow paragraphs, so a much longer replacement can run into neighbouring text; shorten the wording or reduce the size. Text drawn in unusual ways (inside embedded graphics, or with fonts that have no character mapping) may not be editable; the editor tells you instead of risking damage to the page. Your work is autosaved in your own browser storage during the session and cleared when you finish.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF editor really free?
Yes. All editing features are free for everyone, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you edit. The site is supported by advertising, which never appears inside the editor.
Can I edit the existing text in any PDF?
You can edit text in PDFs that contain real, selectable text, which covers most documents exported from Word, browsers and design tools. Scanned documents contain images of text and need OCR first; you can still add new text to them.
What happens if the original font does not contain a character I type?
Embedded fonts are often subsets that only include the characters used in the document. If a character is missing, the editor uses the closest standard font for that piece of text and shows you a notice, so you never get blank or broken characters without knowing.
Does the editor just cover old text with a white box?
No. Edited and deleted text is changed in the page content itself, so the old wording does not remain hidden underneath, and copying or searching the result shows the new text.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The editor runs entirely in your browser tab. The file is read into memory on your device and the edited PDF is created there too.
Can I edit a password-protected PDF?
Yes, if you know the password. Enter it when prompted; it is used only in your browser to decrypt the file. We cannot open files whose password you do not know.
Why does my edited line overlap the next word?
PDF pages have fixed layouts and the editor does not reflow surrounding text. If your new wording is longer than the original, shorten it, reduce the font size, or move other text to make room.
Can I edit a PDF on my phone?
Yes. The editor works in current mobile browsers on Android and iPhone. On small screens the page thumbnails and the properties panel open as slide-out panels.
